Here in Island Park moose are a common sight, often seen wading through wetlands or munching on willows. Their long legs help them navigate deep snow in winter and swim across lakes and rivers with ease.

After years of watching her roam the wild, raise her cubs, and inspire so many with her resilience, it’s heartbreaking to hear she was lost in a tragic accident.
Grizzly 399 wasn’t just a bear; she was a symbol of the wilderness we cherish so much here. Her legacy will continue to remind us of the delicate balance between nature and humanity. Our hearts go out to those who followed her story as we did, and to the wild places she called home.

Johnny Sack was an immigrant from Germany in the late 1800s. He and his brother ended up in Idaho because they wanted to work with cattle. Sack had been a cabinet maker and worked for Studebaker making wagons. The skills learned in those occupations would help him build his cabin.
In 1929, Sack leased land from the Forest Service for $4.15 a year. Three years later he would build start to build his cabin on this land. It took him about 3 years to build the cabin, because he built it entirely by hand. He even built the furniture that is in the cabin.

Yup, you read that right. We have Pelicans here in Idaho.
The Pelicans you see up here are the
White American Pelicans.
Did you know that
1. The American White Pelican has an impressive wingspan of up to 9 feet, making it one of the largest flying birds in North America.
2. Unlike Brown Pelicans, which dive to catch their prey, American White Pelicans fish in groups.
3. American White Pelicans are migratory. They breed inland North America and winter along the southern coasts, including the Gulf of Mexico and southern California.
4. These pelicans don't dive from the air to catch fish like some other pelican species. Instead, they scoop up fish while swimming on the water's surface using their large, expandable pouches.

1. Elk are one of the largest species in the deer family and can weigh up to 700 pounds.
2. Male elk are known for their impressive antlers, which they shed and regrow every year.
3. Elk are incredibly fast, reaching speeds up to 45 miles per hour when running.
4. In the fall, male elk “bugle” to attract females and establish dominance over other males.
5. Elk are herbivores, grazing on grasses, leaves, and bark, especially in the Yellowstone area.

We came across this little guy at #yellowstonenationalpark the other day.
Did you know that Muskrats are unique, semi-aquatic rodents named for the musky smell and rat-like appearance.
They're known mostly for their destructive burrowing in ponds, streams and dams, but there's more than this to these large wetland-dwelling mammals Muskrats are excellent swimmers, thanks to their webbed back feet, laterally flattened tails, and the ability to hold their breath underwater for 15-20 minutes. They can also swim backward and forward !

Did you know that the Grand Teton National Park is home to a herd of bison that is often seen in the park and is an important part of the park's ecosystem?
The herd began in 1968 when 15 bison escaped from a fenced wildlife park near Oxbow Bend.
As of June 2016, the population was estimated at 666, but the goal is to maintain a herd of 500 animals.

Did you know that baby deer are called FAWNS?
They are easily recognized by the white spots on their coats like the most fampus deer in the world, #BAMBI . When not nursing, the fawn curls up in a bed site and remains motionless, its white spots blending in well with the sun-flecked ground. Fawns lose their spots at 90 to 120 days of age, when they begin growing their winter coats.

Did you know that the Bison in Yellowstone National Park can run up to 35 miles per hour???
(55 kilometers per hour). That is THREE times faster than humans. They are also agile, able to JUMP over fences that are 5 to 6 feet high, spin around quickly, and swim well.
Bison are the heaviest land animal in North America, weighing between 790 and 2,000 pounds and standing 6 feet tall at the shoulder. They are also unpredictable and can be aggressive when disturbed, especially if they feel threatened.
The National Park Service recommends staying at least 25 yards away from bison.
If you encounter a bison while driving, be patient and wait for an opening to pass.

"I drove to Old Faithful Monday night hoping for more northern lights after the incredible show Sunday night. I got there just after sunset and watched an eruption with about 200 other people. And then I waited for the next eruption while it got dark. The aurora started to show as soon as it got dark. Finally at 1130pm, Old Faithful erupted again! There's a lot of lights in this area from cars, buildings, and flashlights so those are all lighting up the water and steam! I also captured a meteor on the left since it is also happens to be the Perseid meteor shower the last couple nights."
